Comment
This classification was updated by Jaeger and Eggert in 2002, Hausmann and Jaeger (2010), Kovacic, Krauss and Jaeger (2019). See the correspondance with ESTHER (Table). 6 out of the 8 families described in the orginal paper belong to alpha beta hydrolases. (I III Bacterial_lipase, IV HSL Hormone-sensitive_lipase_like, V Pha_depolymerase, VI LYsophospholipase_carboxylesterase, VII Carboxylesterase). Family II is the closely related GDSL family (GNSH hydrolases not alpha/beta hydrolases) and family VIII is beta lactamase with sequences which contain a GXSXG motif in the c-terminal part of the protein but are not alpha-beta hydrolases. The original classification in 8 families was further extended. Family I was subdivided in 7 subfamilies by Jaeger and Eggert (2002). Family IX was introduced by Handrick et al.(2001). Family X was introduced by Levisson et al. 2007, Bassegoda et al. 2012). Family XI was introduced by Lee et al.(2006). Family XII was introduced by Kim et al. (2009) Family XIII was introduced by Ewis et al.(2004) and Liu et al.(2004) and was divided in two by Charbonneau et al.(2013) Family XIV was introduced by Rao et al.(2011). Family XV was introduced by Bayer et al.(2010) and Lee et al. (2010). Family XVI was introduced by Fu et al.(2013)
