Non specific carboxylic ester hydrolase. Hydrolyzes various pNP-esters, with a preference for short carbon chain substrates. Can also hydrolyze tributyrin to di- and monobutyrin and 4-hydroxyphenylacetate to hydroquinone. There are more than 1000 strains.
