BACKGROUND: The HDL-associated enzyme paraoxonase protects LDLs from oxidative stress. 3-Hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors (statins) appear to favorably influence the atherosclerotic process by different mechanisms.
