Abstract :

Lipase from Candida antarctica (CAL-A or CAL-B) can be considered the most efficient and widely used enzyme in aminolysis and ammonolysis reactions, as well as for esterification, transesterification, and alcohol and amine resolutions. This review describes the recent studies related to aminolysis and ammonolysis reactions catalyzed by CAL-B and CAL-A under various reaction conditions, substrates, and using different apparatus. These enzymes have been shown to be versatile, stable, and active when employed in a large number of organic solvents, ionic liquids, free-solvent systems, bioreactors, and continuous-flow systems. The commercial, immobilized lipase forms present facile use possibilities and recycle-ability, thus reducing process costs and making the procedure more environmentally friendly. CAL-B has been widely used for the synthesis of enantiopure amides and amines, alpha-hydroxy amides, phenolic amides, fatty-amides, polyunsaturated fatty-amides, polyhydroxylated fatty-amides, pseudo-ceramides, biopolymers, building block compounds, and drugs. Thus, biocatalytic reactions catalyzed by C. antarctica lipase have been demonstrated to have much potential in the development of eco-friendly processes in the biotechnological industry.
