Mesoderm-specific transcript (Mest) predominantly expressed in mesoderm and its derivatives is also an imprinted gene whose expression is dependent on parental origin and is designated Peg1 (paternally expressed gene-1). Mest is involved in the modulation of adipose tissue expansion. Mest is also highly expressed in the developing and adult brain. Curiously orthologues seem present in vertebrates, few invertebrates (molluscs, ticks, amphioxus) but not in insects or nematodes. Absent in plants and present in a limited number of bacteria
