Glycosyldiacylglycerols are important membrane constiutents of higher plants, yeasts, and many lower organisms. They may substitute for phosphoglycerolipids. They possess a 1,2-diacyl-sn-glycerol backbone and polar carbohydrate moiety stand in position sn-3. (mono- and digalactosyldiacylglycerols and sulfoquinovosyldiacylglycerols are key components of the thylakoid membranes in chloroplasts). Present in bacteria but rare in animal tissues
