Zearalenone was first discovered in 1962 in extracts from moldy maize and is produced by several species of Fusarium. ZEN is also detected in other grains including oats and barley. Zenis a non-steroidal estrogen mimic capable of binding to the mammalian estrogen receptor. Zen can lead to significant reproductive defects, including enlargement and swelling of the ovaries and uterus along with reduced litter sizes and increased stillbirths in swine. Zearalenone can be hydrolyzed and inactivated by the lactonase ZHD. The term 'macrolide' encompasses a diverse family of unrelated compounds with large macrolactam rings. Zearalenone differs from other quorum-sensing lactones. These are organic compounds containing a lactone ring of at least twelve members.
