Israel Silman was one of the most prominent scientist in the cholinesterase and neurobiology fields. He did his Ph.D. thesis under the supervision of Prof. E. Katzir at The Weizmann Institute. He returned there in 1968 after postdoctoral studies in the U.S, and joined the newly founded department of Neurobiology in 1975. He was lately Head of the Nella and Leon Benoziyo Center for the Neurosciences. With Mike Ferguson and Steve Homans, he determined the structure of the anchoring domain of the dimeric form of AChE from the electric organ of Torpedo californica. This form is anchored to the outer face of the plasma membrane by a phosphatidylinositol (PI), covalently attached, via an oligoglycan (G) extension. With Joel Sussman and Michal Harel he obtained AChE crystals and revealed the first 3D structure of a cholinesterase. This lead to the definition of the alpha/beta hydrolase fold. He was part of the team of leaders who created the cholinesterase meeting series
